Asima Birjis Empowering Artisans Through Hand Embroidery

This has been Asima’s life mantra. Born in Hyderabad, grew up with limited resources but limitless ambition. ‘Asima Birjis, a master craft person and director of SAI SADHGURU producer company ltd., has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the art of hand embroidery. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Telangana, she learned the craft from her mother at a young age, participating in exhibitions and training programs that shaped her skills. From receiving her artisan card to becoming a mentor for many artisans in Yakutpura and surrounding areas, Asima’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of traditional craftsmanship. Artisan Card No. SRHYC 300984. She attended integrated design workshop from DCH, after the completion she became a master craft person. She completed her schooling from Asifia High School, Hyderabad, Telangana. Her journey with handicrafts began in childhood, learning hand embroidery with her mother, respected Asiya Khatoon, founder of Mahila Sanatkar. From a young age, she actively participated in training programmes and exhibitions, including events organized by the Khan Bahadur Babukhan Foundation. Over the years, she have worded extensively to promote traditional hand embroidery and empower women artisans. Early trainings and experiences 1992 - Conducted training for 25 women’s in Boys Town High School, Jahanuma, Hyderabad, during a month of summer camp. Attended workshops on design development and quality testing programmes in Golconda handicrafts. 2011 - Attended a marketing and packaging workshop at RTC X Roads, Hyderabad. 2012 - Joined Mahila Sanatkar as a training in-charge. 2012 - Completed a 2 month design development workshop from Golconda handicrafts, training 30 candidates in Charminar, Hyderabad. 2015 - Completed a 2 month hand embroidery training from Aleap for 26 candidates in Purani Haveli, Hyderabad. Leadership and achievements For women’s empowerment initiatives while participating in multiple exhibitions. 2021 - Elected as a chair person of Mahila Sanatkar, leading training and production programmes for women artisans. 2022 - Conducted a 3 month workshop in Yakutpura, Hyderabad, training 40 candidates. 2023 - Completed a training programme with 30 candidates in traditional hand embroidery as centre manager. December 2023 – Organised a craft demonstration and awareness programme at Hussain Alam College and Shashidha Vidyalaya, Hyderabad, sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). 2023–2024 - Successfully completed the Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan programme. Vision and Impact Asima Birjis continues to inspire the artisan community with her dedication to skill preservation, innovation in design, and women’s empowerment. Through her leadership roles and hand on training, she has mentored hundreds of artisans, ensuring that the heritage of traditional handicraft remains alive for future generations. “This journey is a reminder that with vision, consistency, and determination, success is never out of reach. Asima continues to inspire many, proving that every challenge is an opportunity and every dream is worth pursuing. This success story is not just about achievements, but about the courage to believe and the strength to never give up.”

Ayesha Begum Preserving Zari Zardozi Heritage

My interest about Zari Zardozi from Childhood neighbour, some people doing zari zardozi interest raised about zari zardozi in my home tenant come and doing zari work. I learned how to do zari zardozi after school start doing zardozi work, after father death financial crises I started doing with my brothers and sisters responsibility come to my shoulders because I am elder in my family. I learned and started doing job work at home then start working in kharkana interest become need. In 1992 started job work at home. In 2002 joined Mahila Sanatkar, from Mahila Sanatkar made artisan card from DCH. I attended training programme from DCH. Integrated design workshop attended, after programme Mr. Rajesh Sir, encourage for stated award and I got state award in 2021. Till now continuing working with Sai Saddguru Handicraft producer company Ltd. Participating exhibition’s providing trainings, for new comers helping in job works.

Personal Philosophy "I’m a firm believer in the power of women supporting women. From small wins to major milestones, I celebrate the strength, resilience, and brilliance that women bring into every space. Every day, I aim to break a bias, uplift a sister, and lead by example." Early Trainings and Experiences 1997-2000: Joined Begum Babukhan Craft Centre, Basheerbagh, Hyderabad, as a Craft Instructure, providing training to batches of 20 candidates for two months each (totaling 120 candidates per year, over 4 years: 480+). 2000: Attended a 15-day Certified training program for Management Development Program from Andhra Pradesh Productivity Council (AAPC). Completed 2 months of certified advance training from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Nampally Hyderabad. Attended a 6 months Skill upgradation training program for Zari Zardozi, Organized by Mahila Sanatkar, Hyderabad, and Sponsored by Development Commissioner Handicraft (DCH), Ministry of Textiles Govt. of India, New Delhi. 2009: Joined as a Craft instructor for Traditional Handicraft in Mahila Sanatkar, Aurangabad Branch, Maharashtra. Conducted Local Training and Jan Shikshan Sansthan programme for 3 batches in a year. 2010: Completed certified training for Advance Tailoring & Hand Embroidery, Organized by Mahila Sanatkar, Hyderabad. Completed Certified Training program of Marketing in Garments, Organized by Mahila Sanatkar, Hyd., Sponsored by SIDBI, Hyderabad. Completed two months Certified training program in Production and Quality Management from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Hyderabad. Leadership and Achievements 2012-2017: Worked as an instructor and production in-charge in Mahila Sanatkar, Aurangabad Branch, MH. 2017: Shifted to Mahila Sanatkar, Hyderabad, as a production in-charge. Conducted a 6-month Training Program for Zari Zardozi with Safe the Children’s, Balapur, Hyderabad, for 30 candidates. 2021: Became Vice Chairperson in Mahila Sanatkar, Hyderabad. 2022: Conducted an Integrated Design Workshop with 40 candidates, organized by Mahila Sanatkar, Sponsored by Golconda Handicraft, Hyderabad. 2023: Started as a Master Craft person for SAMARTH program with 30 candidates, organized by Mahila Sanatkar, and Sponsored by Development Commissioner Handicrafts (DCH). 2023: Became a Director in Saddguru Handicraft Producer Company LTD. Organized Craft Demonstration and awareness programme in Hussain Alam Collage and Shardha Vidyalaya, Lal Darwaza, Hyderabad, organized by SSHPCO LTD., Sponsored by Development Commissioner Handicraft (DCH), Hyderabad.
